Your 2 Day Sahara Desert Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga begins with an early morning pickup from your Marrakech hotel or riad (around 7:00 AM). We’ll journey through the spectacular High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2260m), stopping at panoramic viewpoints to capture the breathtaking scenery and glimpse traditional Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides.
Continuing eastward, we’ll visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Ben Haddou, a stunning example of Moroccan earthen clay architecture and a famous filming location for Game of Thrones, Gladiator, and many other productions. After exploring this ancient kasbah, we’ll drive through Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Morocco.”
Following lunch at a local restaurant, we’ll continue our journey through changing landscapes, passing through Draa Valley with its impressive palm groves. By late afternoon, we’ll arrive at the edge of the Sahara Desert in Merzouga, where your camel caravan awaits.
Experience a magical camel trek through the Erg Chebbi dunes as the sun begins to set, painting the desert in golden hues. You’ll arrive at our desert camp nestled among the dunes, where you’ll enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner under the stars, followed by Berber music around the campfire and a night in a comfortable desert tent.
Wake up early to witness a spectacular desert sunrise – an unforgettable moment as the first rays of light transform the dunes. After breakfast at the camp, you’ll trek back by camel to meet your driver (or transfer by 4×4 if preferred).
Our return journey to Marrakech follows a different route, allowing you to experience new landscapes. We’ll pass through Rissani, a historic trading center, and continue to the impressive Todra Gorge, where massive rock walls rise dramatically on either side of a narrow passageway.
After lunch, we’ll continue through the Dades Valley and across the High Atlas Mountains, making scenic stops along the way. We’ll arrive back in Marrakech in the evening, where we’ll drop you off at your accommodation, concluding your 2 Day Sahara Desert Tour adventure.
The Driving Reality: Expect roughly 9 to 10 hours of scenic driving each day. This journey crosses the High Atlas Mountains (Tizi n’Tichka), the Draa Valley, and the Anti-Atlas. We use private transport to minimize stops and maximize your time in the dunes.
The Dromedary Trek: You will arrive in Merzouga around 5:30 PM. From here, you’ll trade the vehicle for a dromedary for a 1-hour trek into the heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes to witness the Saharan sunset.
The Overnight Stay: You will sleep in a private ensuite tent at our desert camp. The evening includes a traditional Moroccan feast, Berber drumming around the campfire, and world-class stargazing.
The Return Leg: Day 2 begins with a sunrise dromedary ride and breakfast before a streamlined return to Marrakech, including a focused stop at the UNESCO-listed Ait Ben Haddou ksar.
While 2 days involve significant driving time (approximately 8-9 hours each way), it is enough to experience the highlights of the Sahara Desert, including camel trekking, overnight camping, and witnessing both sunset and sunrise over the dunes. For those with limited time in Morocco, our 2 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga offers an efficient way to experience the magic of the Sahara. However, if your schedule allows, we recommend our 3-day tour for a more relaxed pace.
Yes, this tour is suitable for families with children, though parents should consider the long driving hours. Children typically enjoy the camel ride and desert experience. For younger children (under 6), we can arrange for them to ride on the same camel as a parent. We also offer family tents at our desert camps. Please inform us of the children’s ages when booking so we can make appropriate arrangements.
Most of our camps in Merzouga use solar power. You can usually charge your devices in the main dining tent or in your private tent if you book the luxury camp. We still recommend bringing a power bank so you can take plenty of photos of the dunes.
The camel ride to the camp takes about an hour and moves at a gentle pace, making it suitable for most ages. If you prefer not to ride a camel, we can arrange a 4×4 transfer to the camp at no extra cost. This way, you can still enjoy the sunset and the desert experience in comfort.
