Our 4 day tour Marrakech to Merzouga takes you from the lively Red City (Marrakech) to the heart of the Sahara Desert. You’ll cross the High Atlas Mountains, visit old kasbahs, walk through stunning gorges, and enjoy a camel ride across Merzouga’s golden dunes.
This 4 day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga is planned for comfort and discovery. You’ll travel at a relaxed pace, enjoy Berber hospitality, and spend a night in a desert camp under the stars. If you’re short on time, our 3-day tour covers the main highlights. If you want to explore further, our 5-day tour offers extra time to visit additional valleys, kasbahs, and Berber villages, and 2 nights in the desert.
On our final day of the 4 day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga, we dive into the “Hollywood of Africa” with a visit to the Atlas Film Studios or the historic Taourirt Kasbah. A special highlight today is a detour to the Oasis of Fint, a lush green paradise hidden between volcanic mountains, where we can have mint tea with a local family and see how life functions in a traditional mountain oasis.
For lunch, we’ll stop at a high-altitude mountain village like Tadart to enjoy grilled meats and fresh salads with a view of the peaks. We descend the Atlas Mountains in the afternoon, arriving back in Marrakech around 6:00 PM, where we will drop you off directly at your hotel or Riad.
Driving Distance: ~195 km (121 miles)
Total Driving Time: 4 to 5 hours
The total distance is approximately 560 km (350 miles). On a 4 day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga, we break this down into manageable segments. You will spend about 4 to 6 hours in the vehicle per day, which is much more comfortable than the 10-hour return drive required by shorter 3-day tours. We make frequent stops for photos, coffee, and scenic views to keep the journey enjoyable.
We choose local, family-run restaurants that offer real Moroccan food. You’ll get to try Berber Tagines, fresh salads, and Madfouna (Berber Pizza) while enjoying views from rooftop terraces. We skip the big tourist cafeterias so you can experience the true flavors of the area. If you have any dietary needs, like vegan or gluten-free, just tell your driver.
Most of our camps in Merzouga use solar power. You can usually charge your devices in the main dining tent or in your private tent if you book the luxury camp. We still recommend bringing a power bank so you can take plenty of photos of the dunes.
The camel ride to the camp takes about an hour and moves at a gentle pace, making it suitable for most ages. If you prefer not to ride a camel, we can arrange a 4×4 transfer to the camp at no extra cost. This way, you can still enjoy the sunset and the desert experience in comfort.
