5 Days Tour from Marrakech Overview

Did you ever dream of watching the sun set behind the horizon from atop a golden sand dune, hearing nothing but the whistling of wind and the light rhythmic steps of a dromedary? A  5 days tour from Marrakech desert trip is not just a journey; it is a slow movie of Morocco’s soul.

Amidst the throngs of travelers racing to tick off that desert trip in three days, spending five lets you breathe. It allows you to spend time with a nomadic family, explore ancient Kasbahs, and make a gradual transition from the pulsating “Red City” of Marrakech to the silent gold-sand dunes of the Sahara. We are locals who have roamed these mountain passes and desert tracks since we were kids, and we designed these 5 days from Marrakech to Merzouga as the best you can choose for desert travel in 2026. This extended timeframe ensures you experience the desert’s magic without the exhaustion of a rushed schedule.
From Marrakech to desert in 5 days – the best itinerary for luxury, high-end photography & depth of culture. Unlike shorter tours, which keep you stuck in the car for 10 hours a day, this itinerary breaks the drive into manageable, scenic chunks that actually allow you to explore Morocco’s landscape.

You’ll travel over the beautiful High Atlas Mountains, visit the “Hollywood of Africa” in Ouarzazate, and spend 2 full nights in the Merzouga area. That would make sure you no longer just “pass through” the desert but really live according to its rhythm and let your body and mind adjust to the laid-back speed of the Sahara. We focus on private, bespoke experiences that will let you pull over any time you see a view that knocks your socks off – meaning your Marrakech itinerary 5 days will fit perfectly with what you envisioned — raw, intimate, and life-altering.

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas – Ait Ben Haddou – Dades Valley

We depart Marrakech at 8:00 AM, leaving the city behind for the majestic High Atlas Mountains. We navigate the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m), offering stunning views of Berber hamlets that seem to defy gravity. We visit the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a masterpiece of earthen architecture, where you will learn about the history of the Glaoui family. After a lunch overlooking the Kasbah, we pass through Ouarzazate and the Valley of the Roses—where the air smells of Damascus roses in the spring—arriving in the Dades Valley. You will spend your first night of this 5 days tour from Marrakech in a boutique Riad overlooking the river, enjoying the cool mountain air and local hospitality.

    Driving Distance: Approximately 315 km
Total Driving Time: 5-6 hours (including stops)
Accommodation: Riad Gabsi Dades or similar

Day 2: Dades Gorges – Todra Gorges – Merzouga (Sahara)

After breakfast, we explore the deep canyons of the Dades Valley before heading to Todra Gorges, where the limestone cliffs rise 300m above the riverbed. You’ll have time to walk through the canyon and see the local women washing rugs in the stream. We continue through the palm groves of Tinejdad and Erfoud, famous for their ancient fossils and marble workshops. By late afternoon, we reach the edge of the dunes in Merzouga. Here, you mount your dromedary for a 90-minute trek into the dunes to watch the sun dip below the sand, then arrive at your luxury desert camp for a night of music and stars. This is a highlight of any 5-day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga.

    Driving Distance: Approximately 255 km
Total Driving Time: 6–7 hours (including stops)
Accommodation: Mirage Luxury Camp or similar

Day 3:Exploring the Secrets of Merzouga

This is the heart of your 5 days from Marrakech. Instead of packing up, we spend the day exploring the desert’s edge. We visit the village of Khamlia to witness the soulful Gnawa music performed by descendants of Sub-Saharan travelers. We then go off-road to visit a nomadic family living in the “black desert” to share tea and learn how they survive in this beautiful yet harsh environment. In the afternoon, you can try sandboarding or take an optional 4×4 dune tour to see the abandoned Kohl mines. We spend a second night in the dunes, allowing the peace of the desert to truly sink in during your Marrakech itinerary 5 days.

Note for Day 3: For your second night, you can either stay in the luxury desert camp or choose a comfortable hotel in Merzouga at the edge of the dunes.

    Driving Distance: Approximately 60 km
Total Driving Time: 3–4 hours (off-road desert tracks and local villages)

Day 4: Merzouga – Rissani Markets – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate

We wake early for the sunrise over the dunes—a moment of pure magic as the colors shift from purple to gold. After breakfast, we visit the Rissani Markets, home to one of Morocco’s most authentic traditional souks and the birthplace of the current Alawite dynasty. Our route then follows the Draa Valley, a lush green ribbon of millions of date palms stretching through the desert landscape for over 200 kilometers. We cross the Anti-Atlas Mountains through the pass of Tizi’n-Tinififft, arriving in Ouarzazate for a relaxing evening in a Riad with a pool and palm-shaded gardens.

    Driving distance: Approximately 365 km
Driving time: 6-7 hours (including stops)
Accommodation: Kasbah Yu Palace or similar

    Day 5: Ouarzazate – Telouet – Marrakech

On the final day of your 5 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga, we visit the Atlas Film Studios to see where The Mummy and Gladiator were filmed. We then take a scenic mountain road—the old caravan route—to Telouet Kasbah, the former lavish palace of the Pacha Glaoui. Though the exterior is rugged, the interior features some of the finest mosaic and cedar wood craftsmanship in the country. This is a “hidden gem” most 3-day tours skip. We cross the mountains one last time, arriving in Marrakech by 6:00 PM, filled with memories of the great South.

    Driving Distance: Approximately 195 km

In the Sahara Desert, you’ll experience our luxury desert camp with proper beds, quality linens, and private bathroom facilities. What is the difference between a private and a shared 4-day tour?

A private Marrakech to Merzouga 4 days private desert tour gives you complete flexibility. You can choose when to start your day, stop to enjoy any view, and have your driver’s full attention. Shared tours cost less but follow a set schedule and include a fixed group.

    Can I customize this itinerary?

Absolutely! As this is a private tour, we can customize the itinerary to match your interests. Whether you want to spend more time in certain locations, add specific activities, or adjust the pace of travel, we’re happy to accommodate your preferences. Just let us know your wishes when booking.

Is it safe to travel to the Merzouga desert?

The route from Marrakech to the Sahara is safe and popular with travelers. Our drivers are experienced and know the mountain roads and desert paths well. Morocco is famous for its hospitality, and the south is especially friendly to visitors from abroad.

What should I pack for a 5-day desert tour?

We recommend packing lightweight, breathable clothing for daytime, along with warmer layers for evenings (especially in winter months when desert nights can be cold). Essential items include: sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, sandals, personal medications, camera, and a small daypack. A scarf is useful for protection against occasional dust. Modest clothing is recommended when visiting traditional villages.

Can I charge my phone and camera in the desert camp?

Most of our camps in Merzouga use solar power. You can usually charge your devices in the main dining tent or in your private tent if you book the luxury camp. We still recommend bringing a power bank so you can take plenty of photos of the dunes.

Is it safe to ride a Dromedary?

The camel ride to the camp takes about an hour and moves at a gentle pace, making it suitable for most ages. If you prefer not to ride a camel, we can arrange a 4×4 transfer to the camp at no extra cost. This way, you can still enjoy the sunset and the desert experience in comfort.
